AGCO Corporation is an American agricultural machinery manufacturer based in Duluth (GA), United States. As a leading global manufacturer of agricultural equipment, AGCO offers a full range of tractors, combines, mowers, sprayers, forage and soil tillage equipment that is distributed through more than 3,100 independent dealers and distributors in more than 140 countries around the world.
AGCO was formed in 1990, when Deutz-Allis executives bought the North American part of the shares, which owned the Deutz-Fahr brand, from the parent company KHD (Klöckner-Humboldt-Deutz). KHD bought part of the Allis-Chalmers agricultural business five years earlier. Since then, AGCO has become an international agricultural machinery manufacturing company due to market development, strategic acquisitions and advanced agricultural solutions.
First, the company was called Gleaner-Allis Corporation, then changed its name to Allis-Gleaner Corporation or AGCO. Design for tractors and combines was originally developed by Allis-Chalmers Corporation prior to its sale to Deutz Allis. The Deutz-Allis line of tractors was renamed AGCO-Allis, and Gleaner became its own brand of combines. Deutz-Allis brand equipment continued to be manufactured in South America until 2001, when it was renamed AGCO-Allis. It continues to be produced in lime-green color. In 2001, AGCO Allis was renamed AGCO in the North American sector.
In March 1991, AGCO bought Hesston Corporation, which produces mowing and tillage equipment, as well as such techniques as auger grain loaders (used for quick unloading of grain from a combine), invented in 1947 by Lyle Jost. Hesston had a 50 percent joint venture with Case International, now part of CNH Global. AGCO also acquired the rest of the White-New Idea Corporation, receiving from it mowers, organic fertilizer spreaders and cotton harvesters. White New Idea had a large manufacturing plant that worked in Koulduater, Ohio.
