Heavy-vehicle axles are manufactured by Sisu Axles, Inc. in Hämeenlinna, Finland.
Driven axles are the company's specialty, and they have a corner on the market thanks to their proprietary planetary reduction. In the 1940s, the Helsinki factory of Suomen Autoteollisuus (later renamed Sisu Auto) began producing axles known as Sisu Axles. The factory was sold to investors when it was moved to Hämeenlinna. American Marmon Group is the current owner.
Sisu Axles focuses only on niche markets for very customised axles for big vehicles. The axles were made specifically for usage in harsh environments.
Axles and other components are manufactured and supplied by the firm for use in heavy-duty vehicles made in Finland and elsewhere. Customer service, expert advice, and replacement components are all part of the after-sale services offered by the manufacturer. The plant has a load testing centre where axles may be put through their paces for design reasons.
Planetary reduction axles are Sisu Axles' bread and butter, but they also make non-driven steering axles. Front and rear axles may be used for either a single or several vehicles. Heavy-duty vehicles for on- and off-road usage, as well as industrial and military applications, constitute the primary market.
Planetary reduction is used on the driven truck axles, with a single axle capability of 10-14 tonnes for steering and 10-20.5 tonnes for non-steering axles. Tandem configurations for steering axles are rated to 20-28 tonnes, while non-steering axles are rated to 20-41 tonnes. Tridem variants of the non-steering axles are also available, with capacities ranging from 39 to 61.5 tonnes. Steering, non-driven axle capabilities range from 8 to 12 tonnes. There are also several non-driven, non-steering axles in the list that can carry 13 tonnes. S-cam drum brakes are installed on the drive axles that don't do the steering, and disc or wedge brakes are installed on the steer axles.
The container handling machinery's driving axles use planetary reduction. The towing capacity of a single non-steering axle is 30–32 tonnes, whereas that of a tandem is 26–41 tonnes. Capacity ranges from 12–18 tonnes for powered steering axles, with 10 tonnes for the non-driven alternative. Both the steering and non-steering axles use S-cam and disc brakes, with wedge brakes installed on the heavier steering-driven model.
Both traditional rigid axles and independent suspension systems are available, and they are all driven by planetary reduction for use in military applications. Rigid axles with steering and those without can each carry 10-14 tonnes, whereas tandem applications can handle twice that much, 20-28 tonnes. While wedge brakes are standard on heavier steering axles, S-cam brakes are more common on rigid axles. The 66, 88, and 1010 layouts that can use the 6–8 tonne per axle independent suspension systems. One of two types of brakes, disc or wedge, are used.
