On August 9, 1944, just 6 days after the liberation of Minsk from the Nazi troops, in the old repair shops, the assembly of army trucks "Studebaker" from the United States to Lend-Lisa began.
In 1945, the USSR Government decided to create an enterprise for the production of heavy trucks - the Minsk Automobile Plant (MAZ) on their basis. The first machines that were manufactured by November 1, 1947 were 6 ton MAZ-205 dump trucks with direct bodies created by specialists of the Yaroslavl Automobile Plant (YAAZ). Its basis was the YAZ-200 car, from which the MAZ-205 inherited a 4-cylinder 2-stroke diesel YAZ-204A (4650 cm, 110 hp) with direct injection and direct-flowing blowing, the basis of which were American engines " Ji-em 4-71 "(GM). A car with a 3800 mm wheelbase was equipped with a 5-speed gearbox of the Yaroslavl factory, a pneumatic brake drive, wood-metal cabin, and disc wheels. With a total mass of 12.8 tons, the dump truck developed a maximum speed of 50 km/h.
In 1950, the production of 7-ton YAZ-200 trucks with an onboard platform, which received MAZ-200 MAZ-200 from February 1951, was transferred to Minsk. Outwardly, they were distinguished by a vertical grille of the radiator and a new volumetric emblem in the form of a chrome bison. The machine was equipped with the same engine, had an increased wheelbase to 4520 mm and developed a speed of 65 km/h.
In 1951, the first MAZ-200G version with a high-sided body appeared. The following year, the manufacture of a full weight of 23.2 tons of a MAZ-200V truck designed for a car trailer began with a modernized 2-stroke diesel YAZ-204B (130 hp). After some time, the production of its own trailer for its cars unfolded at MAZ.
In 1955, a MAZ-501 (4x4) car appeared with a 10-led gearbox, a permanent drive on both bridges and an asymmetric center -ceed differential, transmitting 2/3 of torque to the rear bridge. In a collection with a 2-axis trailer-output, he could take out 30-meter whips of trees weighing up to 15 tons from the forest. From next year, a 4-ton on-board truck MAZ-502 appeared on its base and an option with a MAZ-502A winch on single-rope wheels.
In 1962-64 The plant offered transitional models: MAZ-200P truck and MAZ-200M and MAZ-200P truck tractors. For trucks of the series "200" in 1959 and 1964. There was a production of a 100- and 200-thousand MAZ brand car.
And that was only the beginning. From the day of foundation, MAZ has made more than 1.2 million cars. Despite all the difficulties, the Minsk Automobile Plant with a 20,000 team occupies a leading position for the production of trucks.
